1) SUG-TX March 23rd Meeting -
The
Sybase Users’ Group of Texas will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, March 23,
2010. The topic will be “PowerBuilder
12.0 Beta 2 Deep Dive”
by Don Clayton. Don has been digging into the final beta of
PowerBuilder 12.0, build 5244. In this session, we will review the
features in both the PowerBuilder 12 "Classic" version and the PowerBuilder 12
.NET version.
Don will
review the feature set of PowerBuilder 12. Then will come the highlight of the
meeting as attendees get to take the new PowerBuilder 12 Beta 2 out for a
test-drive during an extended hands-on session exploring the features of the new
IDE, creating and deploying a simple WPF application, and migrating an existing
Win32 PowerBuilder application to WPF.
The deep dive
will include the installation of Beta 2, (bring your computers), a review of the
expanded feature set for Beta 2, hands on with the PowerBuilder 12 .NET IDE, and
a review of the release-defining features for PowerBuilder 12 “Classic”.
Expect a spirited discussion regarding the software’s feature set and strategic
ways to utilize the .NET framework and interoperate with other .NET languages
and technologies.
We will also
be giving away the “bling” that didn’t make it to Houston in time for the CTP,
so be sure to make it!

2) Highlights: SUG-TX February 23rd Meeting
The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas held their meeting on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. The presentation was “ASE 15's Job Scheduler and the Self-healing Database” by Jonathan Wesley-James, Principal Architect/Consultant with North America Sybase Professional Services.
With the advent of ASE version 15, Sybase brought the concept of a self-healing, self-aware database to the DBA community. Many people confronted with this new technology either do not implement it due to the fear of the "if it's not broken, don't touch it" syndrome or the question on how best to use this technology.
Jonathan discussed the basic
concepts of the Sybase Job Scheduler, how to best utilize it and go in-depth to
really explore the full potential of this design. Jonathan included a demonstration of the job
scheduler.
