Title: Under the Hood of ASE’s Query Optimizer 15.7

Sybase ASE’s efficient query optimization is designed to deliver unsurpassed levels of performance and scalability. With the advent of ASE 15.7, Sybase taught the optimizer a lot of new tricks (in fact, it was completely rewritten).  Join Bradmark’s database expert, Karl Tharalson, as he presents a technical session highlighting the latest improvements to the query optimizer.  Mr. Tharalson will also examine what they are and the substantial benefits they provide.

BIO:  As the latest member of Bradmark’s R&D lab,  Karl Tharalson is one of the Senior Specialists working with the Surveillance Development Team. Over the past twenty-one years, Mr. Tharalson has worked as a software developer, database administrator and system administrator for many companies.  He formerly worked with Quest in their Foglight development group as well as with BMC in their Patrol group.  He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Seattle University and is a engaging speaker.

4)  SAP Unveils Unified Strategy for Real-Time Data Management to Grow Database Market Leadership

SAP today announced its innovation road map to help transform the database and mobile markets.  At a press conference held this morning in San Francisco, Dr. Vishal Sikka, member of the SAP Executive Board, Technology & Innovation, highlighted the full integration of Sybase and unveiled the company’s vision for the SAP real-time data platform, comprising the SAP HANA platform, Sybase data management offerings and SAP solutions for enterprise information management (EIM). SAP also announced its most recent innovations for the real-time data platform, including:

General availability of the SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse (SAP NetWeaver BW) component powered by SAP HANA

General availability of SAP Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) as a database option for SAP Business Suite applications

Plans to launch a US$155 million venture fund for startups to build on the new platform and a US$337 million incentive program for customers to move to SAP HANA

“SAP is redefining the database market by combining the innovation and expertise of SAP and Sybase,” said Dr. Hasso Plattner, chairman of the SAP Supervisory Board. “At its core is the innovative and now proven in-memory database SAP HANA, which helps customers access and deliver information at unprecedented speeds up to 100,000 times faster than before and enables them to envision fundamentally new ways of running their businesses. Customers can run existing systems more efficiently while easily embracing new technologies.”

5) Third Annual Capital Markets Guide From Sybase Discusses How to Succeed in Today’s Diverse, Highly Volatile Financial Markets

Sybase, Inc., an SAP® company (NYSE: SAP) and a leading provider of enterprise and mobile software, today announced the release of the Capital Markets Guide 2012 – a collection of industry insights from SAP and Sybase executives, partners, industry leaders, analysts and academics. As the third annual guide, this year’s edition shines a light on the nature of financial markets in the past year while tackling the challenges inside financial institutions, including big data, risk exposure, market volatility, vacillating regulations and the latest advanced trading techniques.

With market volatility becoming the new normal, now is the time to harness the power of technology and human expertise. The ultimate goal is to make smarter trades at the speed of business and the Capital Markets Guide 2012 provides expert insights and clear directions so market participants everywhere quickly can make decisions based on the most useful data available.

Upturns and downturns have become part of the routine, yet preparing for them is anything but routine. Rapid change across business processes, technology and strategies has made markets and financial services firms in North America, Europe and Asia much different than they were five years ago.”

7)  International Sybase User Group Badges

ISUG members can now earn badges for commenting on blog postings.  This is the first of many badge activities that will be rolling out over the coming weeks to reward members who are actively participating in the community.

ISUG decided to start with the blogs to make members more aware of this capability they have in the ISUG community.  If you are a member you can create your own blog simply by going to ‘My Blog’ and writing an article.  If you want your ISUG blog to appear on the front page, just send us a quick email.  If you already blog outside of ISUG, you can always cross-post.

ISUG is adding badges for blog posting, forum questions & answers shortly.  They will also be adding badges that are specific to 2012.  The first badge is a lifetime badge — it applies to all blog comments you’ve posted (which would include comments from last year); a 2012 badge would only include comments in 2012.  This will be particularly helpful in the forums so we can see who are the most active current participants!
