1)  SUG-TX August 23rd Meeting – Building Thoroughly Modern Systems in PowerBuilder

The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, from 4:00pm – 6:00pm.  The presentation will be “Building Thoroughly Modern Systems in PowerBuilder” by Don Clayton, President of Intertech Consulting.

Much has been said about PowerBuilder’s high productivity. But many systems in production today are very dated – and that gives PowerBuilder a bad rap.  PowerBuilder 12 remains a potent application development platform that arguably remains the highest-level programming environment for Windows and .NET available. But times change: user interfaces are now “User Experiences” and Windows 7 is a UX game changer.  The Internet is ubiquitous, and more than ever application access is taken for granted.  And Users still want applications that are as powerful as they are pleasant to use, and systems that leverage their computing platforms of choice effectively.

In this presentation, both strategies for modernizing PowerBuilder applications and a real-world development project to build an entirely modern, Enterprise-class PowerBuilder application from the ground up will be explored. Topics will include the strategic decisions made regarding platforms, architecture, code reuse, and the design of a UX with an eye to for the future. In addition to demonstrating this groundbreaking development effort, the speaker will present a variety of ways to update older PowerBuilder applications to achieve higher user satisfaction and productivity. A variety of Sybase tools, including PowerBuilder 12 Classic, WPF, and Appeon for PowerBuilder will be demonstrated.

5)  LTE Ignites Interest In IP Exchange: Two-Thirds Of Global Operators Believe IPX Will Be Essential Within Three Years, According To Sybase 365 Survey

DUBLIN, CA — AUGUST 3, 2011 — Mobile operators around the globe consider IP Exchange (IPX) an essential ingredient for next generation wireless services, according to a new study (“IPX: New Interconnect Strategies for Operators”) of global operators commissioned by Sybase 365, a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc., the global leader in mobile messaging and mobile commerce services.

“Despite the interest in IPX as a next-generation play, operators also report benefits on today’s congested networks. The majority rate the security and manageability of IPX as the main plusses, however operators are also excited by the potential to cut costs by reducing the number of connections needed,” said William Dudley, Group Director of Operator Services Products at Sybase 365. “Operators see potential in IPX to enable them to bring over-the-top services including multimedia and other high-bandwidth content, and social networking into the fold.”
