Register for the June meeting at: http://my.isug.com/e/in?eid=80.

Abstract:

The SUG-TX June meeting will feature John Strano, One of Sybase’s PowerBuilder Rock Stars. John will present a quick overview of PowerBuilder and the latest update to the PowerBuilder roadmap, and then will get into the meat of the presentation: Migrating a Win32 Application to .NET.

With PowerBuilder .NET you can now build applications with a cutting edge User Experience (UX). Using your existing PowerBuilder skills you can create Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications that functionally and aesthetically go toe-to-toe with any other .NET solution on the desktop. This session will discuss and demonstrate the process and review the issues involved in taking your existing Win32 PowerBuilder applications to .NET and WPF.

John will round off the afternoon with a look ahead to PowerBuilder 12.5, the beta for which is now available. To participate in the beta, visit http://www.sybase.com/powerbuilder125beta.

2) SUG-TX May 24th Meeting Highlights

The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas held their May meeting on Tuesday, May 24, 2011.  The presentation was “The PowerBuilder 12 .NET Stock Trader Reference Application” presented by Don Clayton, Intertech Consulting, Inc., and was attended by approximately 10 senior PowerBuilder enthusiasts.

The .NET StockTrader Reference Application was originally developed by Microsoft as an end-to-end reference application demonstrating .NET enterprise-class technologies.  Developed in both C# and Visual BASIC .NET, it boasts a service-oriented architecture based on Windows Communication Foundation (.NET 3.5 WCF) and ASP.NET, and illustrates many of the .NET enterprise development technologies for building highly scalable, rich “enterprise-connected” applications. It is designed as a benchmark kit to illustrate alternative technologies within .NET and their relative performance.  The application offers full interoperability with other reference applications developed in WSF/PHP, WSF/Ruby, WSF/Spring, WSF/Perl, WSF/Python and WSAS and Java J2EE and IBM WebSphere’s Trade 6.1. As such, the application offers an excellent opportunity for developers to learn about .NET and building interoperable, service-oriented applications.

The PowerBuilder implementation of the .NET Stock Trader Reference Application was conceptualized by Don Clayton, developed by Yakov Werde, and sponsored by Sybase.  This is a full implementation of the client tier of the Microsoft reference applications, highlighting PowerBuilder 12.1′s abilities as both a development environment and a runtime platform for rich and thin clients. The PowerBuilder clients are delivered in four versions; Classic Win32, .NET Win Form, .NET Web Form and .NET WPF WCF. These client applications illustrate how to leverage PowerBuilder’s enterprise .NET APIs, DataWindow Technology, and the PowerScript coding language in a developer-friendly and productive IDE to rapidly build Microsoft-compatible client applications.

Topics included a discussion of the reference architecture for the .NET Stock Trader Reference Application implementation, a presentation of the Microsoft-developed versions, a complete exploration and walkthrough of the PowerBuilder developed versions, and tips on how to set up the Microsoft and PowerBuilder versions for self-study.
