2)  SUG-TX September 27th Meeting Highlights

The Sybase Users’ Group of Texas held their September meeting on Tuesday, September 27, 2011.  The presentation was the annual TechWave Recap.

SUG-TX Secretary, Cindy Bean, started with an overview of TechWave by explaining the co-location with SAP TechEd and the joint activities like keynotes and the exhibit hall. It was nice to be with a large crowd although TechWave sessions were on a different floor than the rest of TechEd. That made it easier for the TechWave community to be together but also enjoy some of the benefits of a larger conference. Cindy continued with the big announcements for DBAs which was the release of ASE 15.7, to support SAP. There were lots of great sessions on ASE but Sybase didn’t forget the popular Sybase IQ and Replication Server which also had great sessions.

SUG-TX President, Don Clayton gave a recap of the Application Development track. There was lots of excitement surrounding PowerBuilder 12.5 and Sybase’s newfound focus on HTML5 with PowerBuilder 15.  Also, Sybase previewed an HTML5-based version of InfoMaker that made developing web-based reports, replete with business graphics, a snap.  Sybase also announced the “Mobile Analytics Toolkit”, which is a high-end analytical and graphical engine for use with iPads and iPods, as well as HTML5-based clients.

Appeon Corporation announced that Appeon 7 will generate native applications for Andriod and the iPad/iPhone/iPod platforms in 2012.  Appeon previewed the technology, currently in an alpha stage. It was very exciting to see.  The functionality Appeon is committing to is roughly the functionality available in the earlier version of Appeon (circa 2.8), so don’t expect your MDI applications to move seamlessly to iPad (who would want that, anyway?), but expect the ability to develop modern applications in PowerBuilder, but with simpler SDI-based interfaces, and then deploy them via Appeon Developer as either HTML5 or native applications on these important, emerging platforms. Appeon also committed to provide a client-side data caching mechanism that will operate transparently to the developer to allow users to work offline and later synchronize with the server without explicit coding required for the offline data cache.

There was also a lot of information made available at TechWave about Sybase’s Unwired Platform (SUP) which offers both a PowerBuilder-like development experience for mobile devices as well as the Gartner Group Magic Quadrant leading mobile device management platform Afaria. A major target of SUP is the ability to create mobile interfaces to SAP to push SAP-enabled business processes to mobile devices. This only makes sense since Sybase is now a wholly-owned SAP subsidiary.  Thus, Sybase is pulling together a variety of mobile development technologies (PowerBuilder, Mobile Analytics Toolkit, SUP) and combining this with Afaria to create what promises to be a compelling mobile development and mobile management platform for creating corporate applications, widely seen as the next wave of mobile computing. Thus, 2012 is shaping up to be a very exciting year for developers as these products are finalized and brought to market.

Paris — 28 September, 2011 — Capgemini, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services, today announced it is cooperating with Sybase, an SAP company, to manage the deployment of enterprise mobility solutions. Capgemini will host mobile solutions powered by industry-leading Sybase® Managed Mobility technologies and offer them on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) basis. 6)  SAP to Mobilize Human Resources With Latest Apps Release

New Mobile Apps, Delivered by Sybase® Unwired Platform, to Make Real-Time Human Resources Decisions on Tablets and Smartphones a Reality

LAS VEGAS — Oct. 3, 2011 — Addressing the needs of human resources (HR) departments that support global workforces in real time, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced a series of new HR-based mobile apps to help managers and employees execute HR-based requests on-the-go. The new mobile apps from SAP will increase employee and manager productivity while connecting people anyplace at anytime, empowering the always-on workforce with real-time mobile capabilities for performing a wide range of HR-related activities, including interviewing job candidates, managing employee performance, entering and approving leave requests and accessing corporate KPIs. The announcement was made at the HR Technology Conference and Exposition, being held in Las Vegas, Nevada, from October 3-5.

Today’s workplace is no longer made up of a set of desks in an office building. Equipped with smartphones and tablet devices, workers are “always on” and have become reliant on mobile technology to manage their personal and professional lives. HR functions are crucial to the business, and delays in approvals and HR-based requests and workflows can result in lost productivity. Managers will be able to search for and view employee profiles, initiate and act on HR-based processes and workflow, collaborate on decisions and events, and access critical data — all from their mobile devices.
